Special Freight Considerations for Transporting a Barbecue

Transporting a barbecue via road freight requires special considerations to look after its more vulnerable components. One crucial aspect is protecting the grill’s cooking grates, which are located under the lid and serve as the surface on which food is placed for cooking. These grates are often made of materials like stainless steel or cast iron, which can bang and slide around causing damage to themselves and other parts if not properly secured during transit. To protect these, placing cushioning materials such as foam padding or bubble wrap between the grates can help absorb shock and prevent them from shifting or banging against other parts of the barbecue.

The burner tubes, located beneath the grates, distribute heat evenly across the cooking surface. Damage to these tubes can result in uneven cooking and reduced performance. To protect them, wrapping the burner tubes with foam padding or corrugated cardboard can provide a protective layer against impacts and vibrations during transit.

The lid or hood of the barbecue is another critical part that requires protection during transportation. It has important features such as the thermometer and handles, and helps regulate temperature and retain heat during cooking. To shield the lid from scratches, dents and other damage, wrap it in protective material such as foam padding or blankets. Securing the lid tightly to the barbecue using straps or tie-downs can prevent it from opening unexpectedly during transit.

Protect the ignition by disconnecting and removing any delicate ignition components, such as electronic igniters or spark plugs and packing them separately in padded containers. Securing the remaining ignition system parts such as knobs or buttons with protective covers or padding, will stop these snapping or coming loose.

Preparing a Barbecue for Transport

  1. Disconnect the gas tank. If the barbecue is a gas grill, disconnect the gas tank and safely store it away from heat sources. The tank should be secured in an upright position to prevent leaks or damage during transport.
  2. Dismantle removable parts. Dismantle any removable parts of the barbecue, such as cooking grates, burner covers and side shelves. Pack these parts separately to prevent them from shifting or getting damaged during transport.
  3. Secure the lid. Close and secure the lid tightly with straps or bungee cords to prevent it from opening during transit.
  4. Lock or remove the wheels. If the barbecue has wheels, ensure they are securely locked or taken off to prevent movement during transport. This will help keep the barbecue stable and prevent it from rolling around.
  5. Wrap with protective material. Wrap the entire barbecue with blankets or bubble wrap to provide cushioning and protection against scratches and dents. Secure the wrapping with packing tape to keep it in place.

Transport crates are typically going to be a better option when shipping a barbecue. Crates offer an extra layer of protection against bumps, jolts and other potential hazards during transportation. Note that even if the barbecue is in a crate, it should still be strapped down so that if the crate is bumped, the barbecue won’t slide or knock into the wall of the crate.

Transport a BBQ in a Truck

Once you’ve prepared the barbecue for transport, the next step is to send it on its way. Get all the details of the consignment, including its dimensions, and obtain a courier quote from a reputable freight forwarding company. As long as you have given accurate information, they can handle all the communication from there.
