Bundles and lengths
How to Transport Long Timber and Other Lengthy Items
Transporting long bundles is very common, particularly for builders, plumbers and other tradespeople. On a smaller scale, the regular householder might also occasionally need to figure out how to get their goods from A to B. They might just have bought new curtain rods from the local hardware store, or some long pieces of wood for a DIY project. Transporting long timber and similar isn’t necessarily difficult, but comes with its own unique set of challenges and considerations.
Cages and frames
Transport Goods in Cages and Frames
Some items are particularly susceptible to damage in transit. Glass is probably the most obvious example and includes goods such as glass sheets, windows and mirrors, but also smaller items such as light bulbs. A small crack can render the item useless, so it pays to spend the extra time and resources preparing these shipments and transporting them in the most secure manner.
Other goods, even if they are not fragile, can be awkward to move around due to their size, weight or shape. In these cases pallet cages or transport frames could be the solution.
Cardboard cartons and boxes
Transporting Cardboard Cartons and Boxes
When it comes to packing items for transport, it is hard to imagine what we would do without cardboard boxes. They can be stored, stacked and organised and also secured to a pallet where a forklift can move the whole lot to where they need to be, saving time and resources.
Boxes are easily labelled, picked up and delivered, and are both reusable and recyclable. They are invaluable to the shipping industry where millions of cartons are packed and sent on their way every day.
Crates

Not all items fit snugly in a cardboard box, can be stacked and strapped securely to a pallet or can be bundled nicely together for easy transportation. Some of these goods present a serious shipping challenge. They might be unusually heavy and have an uneven weight distribution, or they might be very sensitive to the smallest bump.

Skids
Transporting Goods on Skids
Skids were used extensively before the creation of the double-faced pallet in the 1930s. A skid is a single-deck loading platform which lacks a bottom deck. As such, it is easy to see that these do not have the same amount of stability as pallets do. This should be taken into consideration when deciding whether to use a skid or a pallet. In a way the skid is a relatively flimsy and outdated option, and the type of items which can be packed onto it safely is limited. Packing dense items on small wooden skids, for example, is not recommended.
