Freight Services in Queensland
Queensland is Australia’s second largest state (after Western Australia) with a total area of 1,730,648 km² and is the third most populated state in Australia. The capital city of Queensland is Brisbane, which has an estimated population of about 2 million people. Queensland is home to an abundance of natural resources, a flourishing agricultural industry, a thriving manufacturing base and is heavily involved in imports and exports. Each of these sectors contributes positively to the economy of the state and country, but because these industries represent a range of supply chains, transport infrastructure and access is a big challenge. The goal of the state is to develop a socially unobtrusive and sustainable transport infrastructure that facilitates optimal freight movement, in the most energy and cost-efficient way possible.
Dual Gauge Access Since 1997
The main rail freight terminal is located in Acacia Ridge. In 1980, a line was opened from Acacia Ridge to Fishermans Island and the Port of Brisbane in 1980. This runs parallel to the Beenleigh line from Salisbury to Dutton Park and then follows the Cleveland line to Lindum. Rail works were carried out in 1997 to create dual gauge access on the line, which allows trains to travel from the Port of Brisbane and across the border to New South Wales without breaking gauge.
Developing a Multi Modal Approach to Freight
The Department of Transport and Main Roads believes in doing everything it can to make sure that Queensland is well-prepared to make the most of growth opportunities. Strategies need to be put into place to ensure that freight is moved in a safe, efficient and sustainable way.
One of the strategies includes developing a multi-modal approach, which is flawlessly integrated, so that transport companies can use the most effective combination of transport for every consignment. Different modes of transport are a better choice for different types of freight and the multimodal approach hopes to optimise the mode or combination of modes used for each task.
Managing Congestion in Queensland
Congestion is also an issue which needs to be addressed if the state is going to be able to meet the freight demands of the coming years. Since June 2004 some tracks in Brisbane have been duplicated in order to increase the capacity on the rail network.
Queensland’s roads have adopted smart technology to allow a customised management of congestion such as variable speed limit signs, flexible lane control, ramp signalling, travel time signs, electronic message signs and roadside data systems. These can all be managed in real time and help to reduce the amount of stopping and starting by commuters and increasing the efficiency of our large item courier services.
