9 Things You Need to Know About Freight in Australia

Before submitting your first courier quote request, please take a couple of minutes to read the following:

      1. What is a Consignment?

      1.What is a Consignment?

The word “consignment” refers to one or more items to be picked up from one location and delivered to one other location.
E.g. one box is a consignment, ten pallets may also be one consignment.

      2. Pack Items Properly

      2. Pack Items Properly

All consignments need to be packaged properly in order to avoid damage during transport.

During the course of the transport, a consignment may be loaded and unloaded multiple times, and will often be transported together with other heavy and bulky consignments.

      3. Insurance is Not Included

      3. Insurance is Not Included

Unless specifically requested and included in our invoice, insurance is not included in the cost.

We can usually quote for freight insurance to cover the consignment against damage or loss. If the pickup and/or delivery date is critical, we may also be able to offer insurance to cover delays.

      4. Not a Removalist Company

      4. Not a Removalist Company

Freight Quote Australia is not a removalist company. As our customer, it is your responsibility to ensure that your items are packaged so that they can safely be loaded and unloaded either by hand (<25g) or by forklift or pallet jack.

We don’t transport couches, bookshelves etc. Even though these types of items can physically be transported via normal road freight, the freight costs will usually far exceed the value of the items being transported.

      5. Accurate Dimensions and Weight

      5. Accurate Dimensions and Weight

Dimension and weight are important. Consignments may be checked (i.e. weighed and/or measured) one or more times between the pickup and delivery destinations.

Any extra costs incurred by Freight Quote Australia due to wrongly stated dimensions or weight may be passed on to you. Remember that dimensions must be in cubic form, and must take into account all the packaging (including any pallet or skid).

      6. Engines and Mechanical Parts

      6. Engines and Mechanical Parts

Items such as engines or mechanical parts need to be drained of any fluid, and must be securely strapped inside a crate.

Failing to properly package e.g. an engine can result in significant damage and extra costs, including futile pickup fees (where the driver refuses to pick up a consignment which is deemed to be unsafe to transport).

      7. Strapping Requirements

      7. Strapping Requirements

For regional or interstate transport, all items weighing over 25kg will need to be strapped to a pallet (or skid).

Even though it may be physically possible for drivers and transport depot workers to lift over 25kg, most of them will not accept responsibility for this. For same-metro deliveries (e.g. both the sender and receiver are in Sydney) it is usually possible to transport non-palletised items over 25kg providing both the sender and receiver have arranged for the consignment to be loaded and unloaded safely.

      8. Loading and Unloading

      8. Loading and Unloading

If a consignment is on a pallet, and if there is no forklift available at the sender and/or receiver end to load and unload the consignment, then you will usually need to request a tail-lift.

Tail-lift services adds a cost of at least $100 (or at least $200 if a tail lift is required at both ends). Typically the maximum size of any item which can be loaded via a tail-lift is 2.3m long x 1.2m wide x 2.4m high. The maximum weight limit for a tail-lift is 1000kg. Note that in regional/remote areas, booking a tail-lift truck may result in significant delays.

      9. Nobody Can "Guarantee" Time

      9. Nobody Can "Guarantee" Time

There is no such thing as a “guaranteed” pickup or delivery date/time. No transport company in the world can guarantee this, even if they use the words “promise” or “guarantee”.

The vast majority of consignments are picked up and delivered within a reasonable time frame. But even the most carefully planned and organised deliveries can be delayed through factors outside of our control, e.g. a road accident, medical emergency, technical/vehicle failure or simply a human error by one individual in the chain of transport.

Costs which affect our courier quote

The main factors affecting the quote you receive are the physical dimensions of your consignment, the location of the pickup and delivery, and any extras which are required. This extra requirements may include things such as a crane truck or the need for hand unloading of the goods at their final destination.
